We at Simplx Security want to wish all of our customers a safe and happy holiday season. Please keep in mind that during this time of year there is a higher risk of home burglary. Be sure to secure your home with your Simplx Security alarm system and check your locks and outdoor motion lights to make sure they are functional. We have put together a few other reminders for you as the Holidays are upon us to help you stay safe:

Heading out of town for the holidays?

Be sure to have your neighbors collect any newspapers or other items that may arrive to your home or driveway while you are away. Be sure to not give any signs that you are gone from your home for an extended time.

Shut off any main water lines coming into your home that could cause a flood within your home if a line rupture were to occur.

Setup timed lights inside your home to give the appearance of activity within the home.

Staying around for the Holidays?

Secure all entrances in your home prior to going to bed for the night.

Set your alarm to “instant” mode when going to bed. This will alarm all doors (even your delayed doors) to trigger the siren immediately if a door or window is opened or tampered. This can be done with the Simon XT Alarm Panel by simply pressing the “Doors + Windows” button twice.

Prominently display your Simplx Security windows stickers and yard signs indicating your home is secured by a monitored alarm system.

We are thankful to be providing Fort Wayne home security and look forward to another great year! Happy Holidays!

We are excited for Halloween this year. We can’t wait to dress up our kids as little Simplx Security yard signs and spread safety throughout our neighborhood here in Fort Wayne. Ok, we aren’t really going to do that, but we do want to help make sure that you and your family have a safe and enjoyable Halloween this year!

Many of us look forward to Halloween for different reasons. For some it’s the endless buckets of sweets, for others it’s the fulfilling of a fantasy to become a super hero. Whatever reason you have for enjoying this spooky holiday, here are a few tips to make sure all your memories are good ones:

Children should always go out trick or treating accompanied by a responsible adult. If you have a group of kids going, the parents should choose two or three of them to go along and keep an eye on things.

Some towns set a curfew for trick or treating which makes it easier for townsfolk to know who’s coming to their door. Make sure and stick to the curfew times and stick to subdivisions and areas with a lot of homes so your kids can get in as much trick or treating as possible in a few hours time.

Let your children know not to cut through back alleys and fields if they are out alone. Make sure they know to stay in populated areas and not to go off the beaten track. Let them know to stay in well lighted areas with lots of people around. Explain to them why it can be dangerous for kids not to do this. If they are going out alone, they are old enough to know what can happen to them in a bad situation and how to stop it from happening.

Instruct your children not to eat any treats until they bring them home to be examined by you. This way you can check for any problem candy and get your pick of the best stuff!

Instruct your child to never go into the home of a stranger or get into their car. Explain why this is not a good idea and what to do if someone approaches them and tries to talk to them.

As bad as it sounds, this is just a fact of life now. Get on the internet and check your local state website for sex offenders. For our Fort Wayne, Indiana customers, click here to be directed to the Offender Watch website or for all of Indiana, click here. Almost every state has one, just do a search for your state sex offender site. Look up your zip code and it should have a list of registered offenders in your area that includes street addresses. Make sure that your kids stay away from these houses!

For more safety tips be sure and check out our reference for this article, halloween-safety.com.

Have a safe and spooky holiday!

Living in Fort Wayne, Indiana lends itself to beautiful surroundings. Green grass, tall trees, blooming flowers, etc… but with that beauty comes maintenance. Isn’t that normally the case in life? Thankfully, we can take advantage of the trees and bushes around us to help better secure our home. Landscaping has a direct impact on the overall security of your home and should be part of your plan when securing your home.

There are several techniques that can be applied in your landscaping that will allow your home to be seen as less of a target for home burglary. Having a Simplx Security monitored alarm system is only one of the ways that you can protect your home, let’s talk about a few more tips that you can implement into your home security plan.

Trim bushes around door and window entry ways

It is important to keep bushes and plants trimmed around entry ways. These can provide intruders cover in which to hide while they work on getting a window or door open.

Plant roses or other plants with thorns below windows or on fences

Who wants a thorn jabbed into them? Not me. A home intruder would have a hard time justifying your home as being the easiest home to break into if there are extra hurdles to jump (especially the hurdles with sharp pointy thorns sticking out of them). When selecting plants to place below windows or around fences be sure that the plants are sturdy and have limbs that cannot be easily pushed aside.

This would also be a great place to have a motion activated exterior light. If the intruder does happen to get caught up in the bush, it would likely cause more movement and provide a warning to you by the light turning on.

Eliminate high branches that could allow access to the second level of your home

When installing a home security system, many home owners will neglect securing second story entry ways. While this is generally considered to be an ‘OK’ practice due to the difficulty in reaching those entry points, you must be cautious when making this decision due to surrounding trees or objects such as a ladder or a lattice that could provide easier access. Be sure to keep limbs trimmed and away from the home to ensure that home intruders do not have them as an option for accessing the more vulnerable entry points to your home. Ladders should be secured, preferably within a secured garage or storage shed. Lattices can be naturally secured by utilizing plants with thorns.

Keep on top of maintaining the grass, an unkept lawn can hint that you may be out of town

There are several things that home intruders look for as signs that a home owner is out of town. A stack of newspapers in the driveway is a clear sign that no one is home. Be sure to have a neighbor collect your mail, newspapers and flyers while you are away. Having a timed external light come on each night is also a great way to have a home appear occupied. However, a porch light that is always on, day and night, can be another sign that a home owner is away. If you happen to be leaving on the day your trash is to be picked-up, be sure to have a neighbor return your trash and recycling bins to their normal storage area.

Prominently display your Simplx Security yard sign and window stickers

Home intruders are greatly deterred by the warning of a home being secured by a monitored alarm system. In fact, in a study conducted by the FBI it was found that 8/10 convicted home burglars had stated that if they had known a home had an alarm system installed, they would have not attempted to enter a home. Your odds of being broken into can decrease dramatically – up to 80% – simply by displaying your Simplx Security yard sign and window decals!

It’s that time of year again… School is starting up! A distant groan can be heard from most kids, and rejoicing from their parents. We at Simplx Security want to make sure that your children can start another school year without running into any extra problems than what their teachers will assign as homework.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind and to go over with your kids:

Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your child can walk to school or ride with on the bus. Find a safe place where the kids can wait for the bus, away from traffic and off the street.

If your child walks to school, consider starting a “walking school bus,” in which an adult accompanies a group of neighborhood children walking to school.

Be sure your child has a list of phone numbers of people to call if they can’t reach you. Put it on their cell phone or on a card they can carry in their backpack or wallet. Post emergency numbers by your home telephone.

If alternate adult supervision is not available, make special efforts to supervise your children from a distance. Consider using a Simplx Interactive enabled alarm video monitoring system to check in on them.

Children should have a set time to arrive home and should check in with a neighbor or with a parent when they do. Simplx Interactive provides access to alarm arming/disarming history, this feature can be utilized to check when your child arrives home.

Make sure your children know to keep the doors locked when they are home alone and whom, if anyone, they are allowed to open the door to.

Set guidelines on who they can have over, if anyone, and what they are allowed to do, such as watch television or use the oven or stove. Use your Simplx Interactive enabled alarm video monitoring system to see if they’re following the rules.

As always, if you have any questions on how we can help secure your home or small business, please do not hesitate to send us a message on Facebook or by giving us a call directly.

The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), which is an organization that serves as an authority on fire, electrical and building safety, has release a new report covering statistics of home fires.

During the five-year period covered by the report, roughly one in every 310 households per year had a reported home fire. Each year, these fires caused an estimated average of 2,650 civilian deaths, 12,890 civilian injuries, and $7.1 billion in direct property damage. On average, seven people died in U.S. home fires every day.

Lorraine Carli, the Vice President of Communications for NFPA had this to say:

These statistics are a sad reminder that fire is still a deadly threat and we must do more to prevent the needless deaths and losses. Properly installed and maintained fire protection devices, such as smoke alarms and residential fire sprinklers, can help to prevent most fire deaths

A few weeks ago, Jeff, a customer of Simplx Security, left his house in Fort Wayne, Indiana for the weekend to visit his girlfriend in Ohio. Everything was going as planned until he received a call at approximately 2 a.m. telling him that his house had been broken into.

The phone call came from his daughter, Elisabeth, who had been contacted by Simplx Security’s monitoring center to inform her about an attempted break-in at her father’s house two blocks away.

First thing I thought was, ‘I lost everything!’ But, my daughter told me not to worry because the intruders didn’t take anything because my Simplx Security System had scared them away. I thought she was telling me that just so that I wouldn’t drive back that night all worried and upset.

Jeff also stated that the 90 mile drive back home that night seemed extremely long. He could not stop thinking about every single one of his belongings and what they meant to him. To his relief, when he arrived home he found all his belongings still at home safe and secure.

I guess the intruders thought that they could work around my security system by cutting a small set of wires that I have going out of my back window. So, thinking that they were cutting my security system, they actually cut the wires to a thermostat I keep on my windowsill to check the temperature… Imagine their faces when the alarm went off on them [laugh]…

Jeff’s house is secured with a GE wireless home security system allowing him to be protected at all times. One of the reasons Simplx can make this possible is because of our partnership with Alarm.com, one of the world’s leaders in wireless technology.

Simplx’s lead technician, Matthew Kay said, “The great benefit for our customers of the wireless technology is that all alarm signals are immediately transmitted to a wireless connection from the home panel to an operation center and from there rerouted to the proper emergency authorities in just a matter of seconds.”

Like hundreds of Simplx’s customers, Jeff said that he is very happy he made the decision to install a Simplx Security System in his home. Knowing that his system is armed brings him peace of mind unlike anything else would.

Now, this next weekend I am going to a birthday party in Ohio again, but I am not worried [about my house] because I know that my system works and the best part is that the intruders know it also. I worked very hard to get all my stuff and I don’t want to lose it! I am excited because you guys saved everything I have. Thank you!
